When harm happens in psychedelic spaces, the harm When harm happens in psychedelic spaces, the harm itself is not always where it ends. Sometimes it is followed by minimising, dismissing, protecting the facilitator, or spiritual bypassing what happened. And that creates a culture where unsafe behaviour can continue. Integrity in this work means being willing to listen when someone says a boundary was crossed. It means not protecting status, belonging, leadership or the reputation of a facilitator at the expense of someone’s safety. Psychedelic spaces can make people profoundly vulnerable. Those who hold them need more than good intentions. One of the more uncomfortable truths in this field One of the more uncomfortable truths in this field is that psychedelic experience does not necessarily equal psychological maturity. Someone can have profound visions, mystical experiences, moments of ego dissolution — and still return with the same unexamined patterns around power, status, control or recognition. Sometimes those patterns can even become harder to question because they are now wrapped in spiritual language. “I was shown.” “I know.” “The medicine told me.” This is where discernment becomes essential. Not every insight is integrated. Not every conviction is wisdom. Not every charismatic facilitator is safe. And not every expansion of consciousness leads to greater humility. For me, this is one of the reasons ongoing supervision, reflection and relational accountability matter so deeply in psychedelic work. A grounding practice for the moments when you feel A grounding practice for the moments when you feel scattered, activated, or pulled in many directions. 🌿 This gentle practice invites you to come back into relationship with your body through the feet, legs, pelvis, heart, head, and central midline — slowly sensing what is here without needing to change it. Grounding is not about forcing ourselves to feel calm. It is about orienting towards support, stability, sensation, and the present moment — and meeting whatever we find with curiosity and compassion. I’m leaving the World Ayahuasca Forum in Girona wi I’m leaving the World Ayahuasca Forum in Girona with a very full heart — and difficult questions I feel we need to sit with as a global Ayahuasca community. It was deeply heartwarming to connect with so many thought leaders, teachers, colleagues and students I’d previously known only online. One such person is @paulinapozo.integration, a sister who shares her wisdom on psychedelic integration. Thank you to @weareiceers and @yorenka.tasorentsi, and to the staff and volunteers, for creating a space where leaders, researchers, practitioners, pioneers and Indigenous custodians of Ayahuasca could come together. I felt honoured to speak alongside @benki.piyako, Ashaninka leader and President of the Yorenka Tasorentsi Institute in Brazil, and @jerovital, in a panel on “Safety, Ethics, and Good Practices.” Benki shared that his relationship with the medicine began at just two years old, learning from his grandfather about the forest, the medicine, spirituality and the ways of his people. Listening to him, I kept thinking about the enormous difference between learning about a medicine and being born into a living relationship with it. It raised an important question for those of us in the Western psychedelic space: as psychedelics and plant medicines rapidly expand, are we truly listening to and respecting their traditional custodians? I was deeply moved by Segua María García Valenzuela, an Indigenous Yaqui woman from Mexico, and @jem_stone1, a Bundjalung woman and co-founder of Indigenous Psychedelic Assisted Therapies in Australia. Although their contexts differ, I heard a common thread: They are asking for respect. They are asking to be included in genuine dialogue. They are living communities who have endured colonisation, dispossession and cultural loss — while continuing to carry and protect knowledge of these medicines. Segua spoke of the loss of land, water, shelter, food and cultural continuity, and its impact on younger generations. What stayed with me was hearing about communities offering healing with psychedelic medicines while lacking even basic resources to do that work — sometimes not even a room in which to offer care.
