We’ve heard this before. When Osho (Bhagwan Shree We’ve heard this before. When Osho (Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh) faced criminal charges connected to his community, many defended the teachings instead of addressing power. When Bikram Choudhury was accused and later found liable in civil court, many students insisted the yoga itself should remain untouched. And today, when conversations arise around figures like Deepak Chopra — we hear similar language: “Don’t damage the movement.” “He’s done so much good.” “This isn’t political.” This is not about equating cases. It is about examining the pattern. Guru culture teaches us to separate charisma from accountability. Trauma-informed culture asks a different question: How does power operate here? Who feels protected? Who feels silenced? When legacy becomes more important than transparency, trust erodes. Ethical leadership in healing spaces is not about perfection. It is about coherence — especially in crisis. If we want psychedelic and spiritual communities to mature, we must move beyond personality-driven authority and into ethical structures, supervision, and trauma literacy. There is something I don’t speak about lightly. I There is something I don’t speak about lightly. I have witnessed systemic abuse in psychedelic and plant medicine spaces — not just isolated incidents, but patterns. Patterns of spiritual authority being misused. Patterns of power dynamics being minimized. Patterns where survivors were subtly silenced, questioned, or asked to “hold nuance” while their nervous systems were still in shock. I have sat with facilitators who were harmed. I have sat with participants who were retraumatized in spaces that were meant to heal them. I have seen communities close ranks to protect reputation instead of protecting the vulnerable. Systemic abuse does not always look dramatic. Sometimes it looks like blurred boundaries. Sometimes it looks like charismatic leaders without supervision. Sometimes it looks like community loyalty overriding ethical clarity. These experiences shaped my work. They are why I teach nervous system literacy. Why I emphasize power dynamics and attachment. Why I speak about projection in ceremony spaces. Why I insist that integration is not optional. Altered states amplify vulnerability. Without training, awareness, and accountability, harm can be repeated — even by well-intentioned people. I don’t speak about this to condemn the field. I speak because I love it. And love demands integrity.
